Mundartlandschaften
Changes in Swiss German Dialects as a Tangible Experience
Do you still know what ‹Bowèèrli› means? Or ‹Tolge›? How about ‹bäumig›?
The project «Mundartlandschaften» («Dialect Landscapes») is a playful contribution to the preservation, documentation and expansion of Swiss German dialects. Swiss German is an extremely fluid language due to its oral nature. It has a unique place in the culture of German-speaking Switzerland and is changing rapidly in our time.
Dialect words can be felt in various places on the tablecloth, making the adaptability of dialect tangible. Only by using two touches at the right places can an explanation of the words be heard. This interaction with others and the tablecloth is intended to encourage dialogue about dialects and to spark curiosity about new influences on language.
